This sections is about the founders of the website and our backgrounds. Below are brief bios from each of us.
Michael Ward
I am a third year (almost 4th!) MD/MBA student at Emory in Atlanta.
Emory does not have an official program but they let you (albeit
reluctantly) do the two programs in 5 years. At Emory, you do your
MBA after your 3rd year of med school and you do one full year of
MBA followed by a year of combined MD & MBA work in your 5th year
overall.
I took 2 years off between undergrad (Emory) and Med school to work
with Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass) in his Health Office and then do
healthcare consulting with Stockamp & Associates (www.stockamp.com)
in Portland, OR.
During med school, I started practice management consulting for a
small surgical practice and I still work with them. I also ran
our student transcript service (like herding cats I tell ya!). I am
quite excited about starting my MBA year this year!
I am interested in Emergency Medicine (although I have not done the
rotation yet!) and at this point in time, I am interested in
hospital management. Personally, I was recently married to my wife,
Marni, a pastry chef, and we are the proud parents of two tabby
cats, Moose and Sassy.
Please let me know if you have any questions about Atlanta, Emory or
anything! I'd be happy to answer them! You can email me at
mward04@emory.edu.

Jessie Merlin
My name is Jessie Merlin, and I am a MD/MBA student at the University of Pennsylvania. I am originally from Pittsburgh and went to Carnegie Mellon as an undergrad, where I majored in biology and history. From there, I went straight to medical school. There are many opportunities to get involved with the medical school administration at Penn, such as a very active medical student government, course rep program, etc. That is when I found that I was interested in academic medical, and also hospital, administration.
Although I had not even considered applying for my MBA prior to arriving at Penn, and had no business experience whatsoever, I found myself applying to Wharton during my second year of med school. I was rejected but encouraged to apply again (interestingly, this happens to many MD/MBA's at Penn), and I did. Penn's program is a 5 year combined degree program-3 1/2 years med school, 1 1/2 years MBA. Most people do the MBA after their third year, and come back to med school during the spring semester of their fifth year. This is what I did.
I have had a wonderful experience at PennMed and Wharton. While at Wharton, in addition to my outstanding experiences in the classroom, I have had the opportunity to participate in many wonderful extracurricular activities. I did consulting involving insurance reimbursements with one of my professors, founded the Health Care Club’s Lunchtime Lecture Series, and currently, I am a founding editor on project with the authors of the First Aid series. I spent the summer between my first and second years in business school working for the CEO of Bayada Nurses developing a human resources program, and shadowing two local hospital administrators.
I am going to do a residency in internal medicine, and am interested in doing a pulmonary critical care fellowship. From there, I want to do 50% clinical work and 50% hosp administration. Otherwise, I spend a lot of time swing dancing and vintage shopping.
If anyone has any questions related to applying to b-school without any b experience, Wharton/PennMed specifics, or anything else, please don't hesitate to email me at jmerlin@wharton.upenn.edu.

History of the National Association of MD/MBA Students:
Formed in April 2004, this organization was created following the 2nd annual meeting of the program directors of MD/MBAs at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. Our purpose is to promote the MD/MBA and to be a resource for individuals interested, those currently pursuing and those who have already completed the dual degree. Initially started as a way to collect articles, websites and other resources, we have realized that we can be an even greater resource for MD/MBAs by identifying jobs and internships, advice, resume and interview help and networking opportunities. In doing this, we have realized that there are other healthcare professionals (such as DO/MBAs, RN/MBAs and DDS/MBAs) in search of resources and we have begun to develop content for them as well.
What Others are Saying:
A number of people have written to us to tell us how this website has helped them. Here are some of their comments:
"the website is great and the GMAT advice...helped me tremendously in my GMAT prep."
"Your MD/MBA website is fabulous! A very much needed resource.... I can
honestly say that in the 30 minutes I spent surfing your site, more of my
questions were answered regarding the pursuit of this joint degree than in the
past 3 months of my begging pre-med advisors and other various faculty and
staff for info and advice."
"The site and the associated resources are extremely helpful and will be used to strengthen my personal statement. It is tough to find much of value (or know what sites you find will be helpful), which makes the links you have supplied great."<
